From: Charlie Dirksen
4/23/93 Cotterell Court, Colgate U., Hamilton, NY (Rvwd 7/95) The opening
to this MikeS is standard. Tramps jamming
is extremely similar to 4/21, only without the groovy Oye Como Va jams.
A mix of sustained off-key distorted b.s. and
legitimate, although plebeian (for Trey), fills. Not special, in other
words. H2 segues into the scene at about 9 mins or so -- ok, I
wasn't paying attention. MikeS was just not impressive or commanding
at all. H2 is sweet, though, as usual (I can't knock H2,
although I think Leprechaun - or is it Le Pricon - is much much MUCH
prettier). Weekapaug comes in at 12:30 ish. Mike's
opening is decent, but not outstanding for him. The jam takes off with
Trey noodling, but not nearly as impressively as usual. In
the first couple minutes, it is an ok Weekapaug; not quite bogus, but
exceptional in no way, shape or form. The "quiet" section
of this Weekapaug jam -- which comes rather quickly -- is VERY interesting,
tho short; just some great doodles from everyone
that work really well (very pretty section). The jam explodes back
into a True Weekapaug Jam at around 15:30 or so. This jam
has some typically inspiring licks from Trey, but it dies out really
quickly, and, stange as it may sound, retreats back into yet
another VERY GROOVY "quiet" mode. At this time, there is a lot of activity
from everyone -- great stuff, that works. My copy
cuts a few times during this great "quiet" jam section, which blows,
so the timing I've got for this version is not to be trusted. The
jam is nonetheless very trippy and exciting at this point (17 minutes
or so). It is more upbeat than usual, with staccato-ed
Weekapaugish and other jams. Some very pretty themes that blend well
enter into the picture in the last several minutes of this
Weekapaug, making it a qualifying ("awesome") version. Out of one of
the non-Weekapaug themes that occur, Fish starts
kicking the Week beat back in, and a beautiful mind-expanding jam is
brought forth, that undoubtedly hosed many people in the
audience (creating new fans). As I said before, because of cuts in
my copy, my timing isn't clear, but I'd put this
MikeSHydroGroove in the vicinity of 25 minutes. The ending dragged
out an extra verse, btw! You should consider getting a
copy of this really strong -- and interesting -- Weekapaug (the MikeS
ain't pretty, though, imo). AMAZING LENGTHWISE at
this show.. ("Keep blowin', Mom!" - Fish, to his mother, who played
vacuum during the Lengthwise!) B rating for this
MikeSGroove, if you care about such things.
