Set 2 Highlights: Stash (Standout Jam), Seven Below > Lawn Boy, Chalk Dust Torture -> Slave to the Traffic Light > Chalk Dust Torture
Set 3 Highlights: Jungle Boogie
And just like that, the 2003 New Year's Eve Run comes to a close. The show starts off in a very unique and fun fashion by finishing the previous night's Wilson before kicking into an old school Mike's > H2 > Groove. Weekapaug in particular brought the heat with a relatively dissonant portion uncharactertistic for the normal Weekapaug Jam. The set continues with a smoking Trey-led rendition of Moma Dance. If 2/26/03 is the quintessential straightforward funky version of this tune, this is among the quintessential rocking Moma's. Guyute follows and is the low point of the set for me (not my song). 2003 has no shortage of killer YEM's (2/26, 7/19 and 7/30, my personal favorite) and this one certainly strives for greatness but never quite completely connects. A strong version that is worth hearing nonetheless. In true tongue-in-cheek fashion, the band rips into First Tube following the vocal jam and brings the whole set full circle by completing the Tube from the previous night. A strong first set that is followed up by my second favorite set of the run (just behind 12/29 II). The Stash that opens up set II is an absolute monstrosity (in the best way) and strays so far over the map that you'd have to be insane to not check this one out. A strong rendition of Seven Below follows before transitioning into...you called it...Lawn Boy. I personally couldn't have thought of a better spot for Lawn Boy, something about the quirkiness of Page getting front and center and crooning that just contrasts so well with the preceding 35 minutes of madness. An awesome Chalk Dust Torture -> Slave to the Traffic Light > Chalk Dust Torture brings the set to a close. To kick off set III, the band kicks into Jungle Boogie accompanied by the Miami Palmetto Marching Band which is just an insane amount of fun. That being said, the rest of the set just feels a lot like the band was having a little *too* much fun as well, particularly Trey. The Jim is definitely worth checking out but aside from that, there's not much that I see myself coming back too. The composed section of Reba was a total shitshow and the rest of the set just felt like the band was out of gas to me, my .02. Frankenstein closes out the night and the run. Overall, a killer New Years Run, I'm extremely surprised about how little I have heard this run talked about and I can't recommend giving it a full front-to-back spin enough, there are tons of gems throughout.
